TAMPA, Fla. – Andrej Sustr cut down the right circle, drove the post and arrived in time to have a cross-ice pass from Ondrej Palat knock off his pads and in to the net early in the second period.
Almost immediately as the puck entered the net, the entire Lightning bench erupted in laughter.
Right at that moment, when the celebratory goal song usually blares through the public address system, something a bit different came across the speaker system inside Amalie Arena.
Instead of ”Fluxland’’ by XL coming across the speakers, Briteny Spears filled the arena with ”Oops, I Did It Again’’ played to the delight of the players on the bench.
It was not any sort of a slip of the fingers from the in-arena presentation team. It was by design.

Yes, Sustr selected the popular song as he personal goal song.
”Breser (Lightning media relations Brian Breseman) asked me if I wanted to pick a song,’’ Sustr said. “And we were kind of joking about it and that was the first thing that came in to my mind, for some reason. It seemed like everyone enjoyed it, especially the guys on the bench as I went by, they got a good giggle out of it.’’
Perhaps it only seemed fitting that the goal was scored, almost by accident, sort of an “Oops’’ goal as it went off his leg.
”Yeah, that happens,’’ Sustr joked. “But I tried to get to the net and Pally made a great play to me and it just happened to find the back of the net.’’
There are other players on the team with their own hand-selected song that plays when they score a goal.
Steven Stamkos has “Hammer Time” by M.C. Hammer, Ryan Callahan has ”Going Back to Cali’’ by L.L. Cool J, Tyler Johnson, naturally, has “Johnny B. Goode’’ by the late Chuck Berry while Victor Hedman chose “Taking Care of Business” by Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Needless to say, Brittany Spears does not fall in line with the rest.
”When he set it up, I didn’t think we were going to have the pleasure of listening to it,’’ left wing Alex Killorn said. “But it was hilarious and that’s the kind of guy that likes to be playful about those things.’’
It can be the sort of light-hearted moment for a team that is deeping entrenched in intense playoff-style games while trying to keep their playoff chances alive, which can be a mental grind on a nightly basis. To get the entire team sharing that sort of a moment can be a bonding situation.
”I’ve been on him before every game that I can’t wait to hear what his song is, and I had no clue what it was,’’ Hedman said. “So it was pretty funny when it came on, he deserved that.’’
Sustr even had some fun with the situation after the game, sending out a GIF via his Twitter feed.
