The Syracuse Crunch were able to bounce back a day after being drubbed by the St. John’s IceCaps, earning a weekend split with a 5-3 victory at Mile One Center.
The Crunch snapped a two-game losing streak in which they lost both games by identical 6-1 scores.
Adam Erne scored twice, his second two-goal game since returning from injury, as the Crunch opened up a 3-0 lead in the first period and held off a late St. John’s rally.
Adam Wilcox stopped 27 shots to earn the victory.
Ben Thomas opened up the scoring at 5:33 in a very successful first period for the Crunch, cutting down the right wing side to pop home a rebound.
Where did @BenThomas_7 even come from?

Erne scored his first goal of the night on the power play goal by tipping a shot from Matt Taormina at 8:51 to make it a 2-0 game.

Cameron Darcy also got on the scoresheet by flinging a shot from the far right edge of the goal line that bounced off goalie Charlie Lindgren and into the net to open up a 3-0 lead heading in to the first intermission.
But… how?

In a penalty-riddled game, the Crunch penalty kill was put to the test often as Syracuse committed nine infractions (eighteen were called in total). Those penalties almost came back to haunt Syracuse as Chris Terry got the IceCaps on the board in the second with his nineteenth goal of the season, cutting the lead to 3-1 at 9:54 of the middle period.
Erne scored again to regain the three-goal lead less than a minute into the third period on a tap-in rebound, his second power play goal of the game and his 13th goal overall on the season
Twice is nice, huh @Adamerne73. ?

.
In the third, power plays again aided the IceCaps as Charles Hudon scored his 18th of the season at 5:27 and Chris Terry picked up his 20th just 20 seconds later, cutting the deficit to just a goal at the 5:47.
The Crunch were able to ride out the rally (they didn’t take another penalty until the end of the game) and at 11:28 Mike Halmo scored his 14th goal of the season off of his own shot rebound to complete the scoring and squelch the St. John’s rally attempt.

Wilcox made it stand up to camp off a reasonably strong performance in net allowing three goals, all of them on the power play, stopping 27 shots, including a breakaway.
Syracuse will travel to Toronto to take the ice against the Marlies on Wednesday.
